FEDERAL HOTEL ACCIDENT
Page Boy Killed

MELBOURNE, Thursday.

Smashing through a skylight on the roof of tho Hotel Federal, Collins
Street, at 10.40 a.m. today, Charles Ferris, 15, of Kooyong Road, Toorak, fell 50 feet to his death down a light well. He landed on concrete paving on the fourth floor.

Terry was a page boy at the hotel.

”We are at a loss, to understand how the, lad came to be on the roof.” the acting manager of the hotel (Mr J. Cleary) said later. “It has been said that he went in search of carpenters, but there were none working on the roof.

”The skylight is on the side of a V-shaped section of the roof, railed
off. Perhaps Ferris was moved by the desire to explore beyond the rails.”

”We have not yet ascertained whether he slipped from the roof surface to the skylight, or walked on the glass.”
The hotel is a seven-storey building.
